In spite of the demands to improve some parts of the Statute of 1588, which arose in the second half of the 18th century, the Lithuanian nobility remained very attached to this codification. However, the surviving evidence proves that this law was repeatedly violated by the actions of the courts of nobility. This is confirmed not only by political writings, but also by diary accounts, sources of judicial practice, the acts of sejmiks, and even the letter of King Stanislaw August Poniatowski calling for the improvement of the judicial proceedings. Moreover, many of the shortcomings enumerated by the monarch are confirmed by other source accounts. This situation became the reason why the local nobility petitioned the Sejm for the said improvement. One of the most serious problems of the nobility’s justice system was the unlawful prolongation of proceedings.
